Arsenal begin talks to wrap up summer transfer before FIFA Club World Cup

Arsenal midfielder Jorginho looks set to leave the club this summer having been linked with a move to Brazil and the Gunners are now in talks to finalise a deal

Arsenal are in talks to end Jorginho’s spell at the club even earlier as he edges towards a move to Brazil. The Italian midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and is available on a free transfer.

The former Chelsea star is not expected to put pen to paper on a new deal with the Gunners. Brazilian side Flamengo have been linked with a move for Jorginho this summer – and it appears that they are attempting to seal his services even earlier.

Flamengo are in talks with Arsenal regarding the prospect of releasing him from his contract early to enable him to play at this summer’s Club World Cup. They get their campaign underway against ES Tunis on June 17, with their next match coming against Jorginho’s former side Chelsea. Club America and LAFC face a playoff to decide their third opponents.

If discussions go to plan, Jorginho is expected to pen a contract with his new employers until 2028. An agreement has yet to be struck but Arsenal are understood to be willing to facilitate his request.

Speaking earlier this season, Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos suggested he was ready to launch talks with a number of interested parties. He said: “Jorginho has returned to London. From April 15, I will begin talks in England, including Arsenal, as well as teams from Italy, Saudi Arabia and Brazil.”

Jorgino joined Arsenal from London rivals Chelsea for a reported fee of £12million back in 2023. He has gone on to make 79 appearances in all competitions during his time at the Emirates, scoring twice.

Should discussions go as expected then his final Arsenal game will be this weekend’s Premier League showdown with relegated Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday. And while he will be keen to take to the pitch, Mikel Arteta will already be without a couple of stars.

Arsenal pair Jurrien Timber and William Saliba will miss the Gunners’ final game of the season on the south coast. Full-back Timber has undergone ankle surgery and centre-half Saliba will also miss Sunday’s trip to St Mary’s after being forced off at half-time in the weekend win over Newcastle.

Arsenal boss Arteta told Premier League World TV: “William is going to be out for a few weeks unfortunately. He pulled his hamstring against Newcastle. Jurrien had surgery yesterday on his ankle, so he’ll be out for a few weeks as well.”

Arsenal will secure second spot in the Premier League by avoiding defeat to bottom-placed Southampton. They have already guaranteed themselves a place in next season’s Champions League.
