Arsenal star offered immediate escape route after refusing to sign new contract

Arsenal have been busy in the summer transfer window, with Viktor Gyokeres among their high-profile signings, but another staff could yet leave the club this summer

Borussia Dortmund are ready to hand Leandro Trossard a route out of Arsenal, it has been claimed. The winger is understood to be stalling on a new Arsenal contract as he considers his options, with the Gunners still potentially set to strengthen in his position.

Trossard played regularly last season as he stayed fit while others struggled to do the same. That included minutes up front, though he’s likely to find that kind of action harder to come by after the arrival of Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal have also added winger Noni Madueke, and could yet complete a move for Ebere Eze. Now, according to Sky Germany, Trossard is among the wingers being considered by Dortmund after the sale of Jamie Gittens to Chelsea.

Former Chelsea loanee Jadon Sancho is another option, potentialy returning for a third spell at Signal Iduna Park. He would be a younger alternative to Trossard, who will turn 31 in December.

Trossard still has one years left on his Arsenal deal, with the club holding an extra 12-month option. However, if there’s an indication that he doesn’t plan to extend, the club may decide the time is right to cash in.

Arsenal are believed to value Trossard at around £17m. This is less than the sum they rejected last summer from Al Ittihad, though that was in part due to the timing of a move making it all but impossible for them to bring in a replacement.

The Gunners look well stocked in attack after adding Gyokeres and Madueke and welcoming the likes of Kai Havertz back from injury. Youngster Ethan Nwaneri will benefit from having another season under his belt, while academy sensation Max Dowman could also earn minutes this season.

“Yeah, it is special,” manager Mikel Arteta said after Dowman impressed against Newcastle United in pre-season. “Obviously what he’s done today against this team in the time that he had on the pitch is something certainly not common to witness for a 15-year-old.

“We are extremely happy to have him. I think again the environment that he’s around in, his family, the people at the club and around the academy as well. Super helpful because they put him into this position so early in his journey having a real chance and a real presence when he plays for the first team.”

When asked about further summer arrivals, Arteta said: “Let’s see, the market is still going on and we’ll have to balance that out with the squad as well. I think we’ll be open to see what happens.”
