Benjamin Sesko has long been linked with a Premier League move, Arsenal among those keen, but he produced a moment of magic in front of Jurgen Klopp, who is now a Red Bull employee
Benjamin Sesko produced a stunning strike for RB Leipzig in front of Jurgen Klopp as interest in the striker remains.
The Slovenian has enjoyed a rapid rise and was at Red Bull Salzburg prior to his move to Germany, where he’s continued to thrive. Sesko has already hit double figures this term having scored 18 times in his debut season.
His latest strike came against Werder Bremen as he riffled home his team’s third of the afternoon. Sesko kept his head over the ball and hammered home into the top corner before reeling away in celebration with Klopp in the stands to watch on.
The German has agreed to become ‘Head of Global Soccer’ for Red Bull – a job he began on January 1. The former Liverpool boss will oversee the company’s international network of football clubs and advise them on playing philosophy, transfer strategy and coaching development.
Speaking on Einfach mal Luppen, a podcast hosted by former Germany midfielder Toni Kroos and his brother, Felix, Klopp said: “Basically, I’m an advisor. Hopefully I can bring calm in different ways and, in other situations, assess things correctly and help the coaches. But I just want to support, not interfere, because I know how disruptive that is. Instead, I want to pass on my experience and work in the world that I know best.”
He’ll no doubt be advising Leipzig to retain Sesko – or at least ensure they demand top dollar. Arsenal have previously been interested in the Slovenian and their need for a striker is well documented amid talk of a potential move in the summer.
In June, despite having Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United among his suitors, Šeško chose to remain in Leipzig and extended his existing contract by another year until 2029.
In Sesko’s debut year he became the youngest ever player to score in seven consecutive Bundesliga games and has remained prolific this term. Leipzig have shown themselves willing to sell their top stars for the right price, parting with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Josko Gvardiol in recent years.
He said on the interest in him: “I don’t comment on transfer rumours. I’m happy in Leipzig and that’s why I recently extended my contract. I want to achieve even more great things here, Leipzig wants to grow a lot and I want to accompany the team on this very intriguing journey.”
