Auf Wiedersehen, Pet star Maya Woolfe has died. Fans have paid tribute to the star, remembered for delivering “the best quote in Series 1”.
The official social media channels for Auf Wiedersehen, Pet announced on Friday afternoon “with sadness” that the actress had passed away at the age of 72.
Maya was known for her role as Uli in episode 11 of the first series of the ITV comedy-drama, which follows a group of North East construction workers. She also made appearances in other popular shows including BBC’s Doctor Who, where she played a receptionist.
The statement released read: “With sadness we announce the passing of Maya Woolfe who played Uli in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Series 1, Episode 11, ‘The Lovers’. Maya’s many TV appearances included ‘The Professionals’, ‘Bergerac’, and ‘Doctor Who’. We send our deepest sympathy to family and friends at this difficult time.”
In the memorable episode ‘The Lovers’, which aired back in January 1984, Maya’s character Uli becomes the love interest of Oz Osborne, portrayed by Jimmy Nail, after Wayne Norris, played by Gary Holton, mistakenly identifies him as a wealthy tycoon’s son.
Following the news of Maya’s death, fans have been reminiscing about her iconic line in a scene with Oz at the posh bar, The Tivoli.
During their date, when discussing Oz’s supposed inheritance of his father’s ‘business empire’, Uli asks: “In the meantime you are just one of the boys? ” leading to Oz’s classic retort: “Look again, pet. One of the men.”
Fans have been quoting a beloved line from the script in their touching tributes to Maya, with one fan declaring it as “the best quote in Series 1”: “Part of the best quote in Series 1: Uli: ‘so until then, you are just one of the boys? ‘ Oz: ‘look again Pet, one of the men’.”
Others took to social media to express their sorrow with messages like, “Sad news. One of the best ever episodes.” While another lamented the loss by saying, “Sad loss, she played her roll very well.”
“Sending love. One of my early loves is Auf Wiedersehen Pet x,” wrote someone else. Maya also appeared in BBC’s Doctor Who where she played a receptionist.
She then had a role in series two of The Detectives as a secretary. Her other credits include Wilde Alliance, The Professionals, Tenko, Bergerac, Triangle, Lief zijn voor elkaar, The Black Magic Man, C.A.T.S Eyes and Dutch Cops.
