Austin Butler is set to take on one of his most challenging roles yet, playing the iconic Patrick Bateman in a fresh adaptation of American Psycho. The new project, helmed by Luca Guadagnino, promises to bring a bold new vision to the psychological thriller.
Hollywood actor Austin Butler is set to take on the role of Patrick Bateman in a modern remake of American Psycho.
Best known for his Academy Award-nominated performance as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, the 33-year-old actor will collaborate with acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino for a fresh cinematic interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis’s cult-classic novel.
Variety confirmed the casting, announcing that the project is being developed by Lionsgate and will bring a bold new vision to the psychological thriller.
They wrote: “Austin Butler is set to star in Luca Guadagnino’s new interpretation of the book American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate. The film, which features a script by Scott Z. Burns (The Laundromat), will not be a remake of the 2000 film, but a new adaptation of Ellis’ novel.”
Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their excitement upon hearing the news. One user wrote: ““Austin Butler has been cast as Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘AMERICAN PSYCHO’ movie” WELL YES!” Another added: “He definitely deserves to play patrick bateman.”
Austin is known for fully immersing himself in his roles, delivering deeply committed and authentic performances, as demonstrated by his transformative portrayal of Elvis Presley in Elvis. Austin previously admitted he “probably damaged my vocal chords” after taking on the role of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis.
The 31-year-old actor sent fans into overdrive last year when accepting a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of the legendary singer as he spoke using an Elvis-style twang. Fans shared their confusion on Twitter, with some slamming Austin for using a “fake” accent.
The star has now admitted he is trying to get rid of the Tennessee accent and said his vocal chords took a hit “with all that singing”. “I am getting rid of the accent, but I have probably damaged my vocal cords with all that singing. One song took 40 takes,” Austin said. The film has been well-received by critics and has gained eight Oscar nominations.
“It has been a whirlwind and it’s amazing because when you are making a film you never really know how it will be received. “With this one there were so many ways it could go wrong so to be received in the way it has means the world to me,” Austin said during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
