Australia has become the first country in the world to ban children under the age of 16 from using social media, including SnapChat, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X
Teenagers under the age of 16 have been banned from social media in Australia, in a world first.
The Australian Senate passed a social media ban for young children which will mean they will be now allowed to use platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram. The social media sites would be liable for huge fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars (£25 million) for failures to prevent children younger than 16 from holding accounts.
However, neither young people nor their parents would face penalties if they were found be be ignoring the new rules. The ban is set to come in the next 12 months after today’s passing.
