Hana A, 15, is one of 10 victims who were tragically killed when former pupil Artur A opened fire at a secondary school in Graz, killing six girls, three boys and a teacher before turning the gun on himself. Speaking at a vigil attended by hundreds of people, Hana’s brother told of how his fears grew in the hours after the attack on Tuesday, and said: “She didn’t contact me, and my worries grew even greater. I’m experiencing something I knew from a movie in real life.”
The 15-year-old was reportedly standing in front of the classroom giving a presentation with her friend when the 21-year-old gunman stormed in and began shooting. The teenager, who was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, hoped to study medicine when she left school, her family said.
Her uncle, Ilhad Kendic, said in another tribute: “She was my child, not just my niece. A flower from paradise. I can’t believe she’s gone.”
It comes after Lea Bajrami, 15, originally from Kosovo, was named first among the dead in the worst massacre in Austria’s recent history. Her aunt Muhabi posted a picture of her and wrote: “With a broken heart and great pain, we inform family, friends that our niece, Lea Ilir Bajrami tragically lost her life in the attack in Graz, Austria.
“We pray for her soul and express our gratitude to all those who share our pain in these difficult times.”
The 21-year-old Austrian suspect lived near Graz and was a former student at the school, who had not completed his studies.
Police have said that he used two weapons, a shotgun and a handgun, which he appeared to have owned legally. The motive for the attack is still unknown.
