Autumn is the best time of the year for laser hair removal– here’s what you need to know

By staff15 September 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

Post-summer is the time to think about booking in for laser hair removal, and we have all the intel you need before your sessions…

Here's what you need to know about laser hair removal

If you’re fed up with the constant cycle of shaving and waxing, laser hair removal could be your solution. Once a luxury for those with deep pockets and ample time, this treatment is now more accessible and quicker than ever due to advancements in laser technology. What’s more, now is the ideal time to book in for your sessions because the reduced sun exposure means a safer, more stable condition for treatment. Plus, it means you’ll be hair-free by next spring!

So, if you’re curious about the process, want to know about the expected results or how many sessions it takes to see a reduction in hair, we’ve been speaking with Chloe Layton, an expert from Laser Clinics UK, who has answered some of the most frequently asked questions about laser hair removal….

So, what exactly is laser hair removal?

“It’s a permanent hair reduction method using single wavelength energy to target the hair directly and destroy the hair follicle to reduce hair growth in the area,” Chloe says.

And how does it compare to IPL? “IPL, or intense pulsed light, uses multiple wavelengths combined with a topical gel on the skin to reduce hair growth,” she continues. “It emits more unfocused energy around the hair and skin area compared to laser hair removal, so it’s less effective at long-term hair reduction.”

Which areas are typically treated with laser hair removal?

A variety of areas can be treated, but according to Chloe, the bikini line, underarms, legs, and face are the most popular areas people seek permanent hair reduction.

Is it effective on all hair types and skin tones?

Hair removal treatments used to be effective only for those with dark hair and lighter skin, but thanks to advanced technology, it’s now suitable for everyone. “We can treat all skin tones by utilising a different wavelength laser,” says Chloe. “Essentially, if your hair has a degree of pigment and density, it will work for you.”

How many sessions will I need?

Most clinics recommend a course of 8-10 sessions. After that, top-up or maintenance sessions should be scheduled every 3-6 months to maintain the results.

How much of a reduction in hair can I expect, and how quickly will I see results?

“We aim for a 90% reduction in hair growth after the 8-10 sessions have been completed,” Chloe explains. “With each treatment, the active hairs will be treated and the results will be more noticeable about a week after every session.”

Is there a “best” hair removal machine for long-term removal?

“At Laser Clinics UK we use Candela Gmax Pro, which is a gold standard medical device to safely and effectively treat all skin types. It’s very effective because it varies wavelengths, meaning stubborn hair is targeted,” Chloe points out, emphasising that when considering an aesthetics clinic, you should ensure they’re able to tailor your treatment to your skin and hair type.

Are treatments painful?

“I tell clients the sensation is similar to a gentle flick on the skin. It’s completely comfortable and tolerable. In fact, clients often comment how pleasantly surprised they are by the lack of pain,” Chloe says.

It’s worth noting that sometimes a bit of extra discomfort is experienced by women who are due on their periods (around 5-11 days before it), so it may be worth considering booking your treatments to avoid that time frame.

Can I have laser hair removal if I’ve been in the sun? If I’m pregnant?

“We tell clients to avoid sun exposure on the area they want to treat for 2-4 weeks prior to the session,” Chloe advises. “As for pregnancy, having laser sessions when you’re expecting is mostly not recommended due to the fluctuations in hormones. It’s better to be on the safe side and wait until after you’ve given birth.”

How much does laser hair removal cost?

At Laser Clinics UK prices start from just £9 for an underarm treatment. Ten sessions of laser hair removal on the bikini area (Brazilian) and underarms will cost you around £390, while 10 sessions on the legs will cost around £900.

Mirror head of shopping Zoe says: “I’d been planning to get laser hair removal for years, and a year or so ago, I finally took the plunge. Waxing is a nightmare, and if I want smooth, hair-free skin, I have to shave every day – such a bother. I was a bit apprehensive because I’ve heard that some lasers can be painful, particularly on the bikini line area where I was getting treatment, but it really was just like a mildly irritating little snap of an elastic band on the skin.

“I’ve seen the teams at Laser Clinics Fulham and Putney, and I can’t praise them enough. I’ve had a full course of sessions now and they ensure I’m in and out in about 15 minutes each time – ideal for fitting into my lunch breaks. I’m delighted to say I have little-to-no hair growth now, and I only need top-up sessions every five or so months when I see a couple of stragglers coming back. It’s definitely the best autumn investment I’ve made.”
