The four-week-old baby was rushed to hospital after becoming “unwell” at a property in Glasgow’s Pollokshaws on May 22, 2023 after being cared for by Yasmin Manzur, 27, and 29-year-old Connor McBride
A four-week-old baby was found to have cocaine in his system and traces of the drug were also discovered on two dummies, a British court has heard. The month-old infant was rushed to hospital after falling ill at a property in Glasgow on May 22, 2023.
At the time, he was under the care of Yasmin Manzur, 27, and Connor McBride, 29. A police search revealed traces of cocaine on dummies located in the kitchen and living room.
Both Manzur and McBride pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court today to causing unnecessary suffering or injury to the boy’s health. McBride also admitted to possession of cocaine.
Prosecutor Danielle McGuinness told the court that Manzur woke up at 4.30am to find the baby unwell and called an ambulance. The baby’s condition worsened at the hospital, leading to him being placed in an incubator and ventilator. “A urine sample was taken and it tested positive for cocaine,” she told the court.
After the positive drugs test, the hospital alerted the police, who obtained a search warrant for the property, reports the Daily Record. Manzur told officers she “did not know how this happened”, while McBride refused to co-operate without legal advice. A search was conducted in the early hours of May 24.
“Swabs were taken from the kitchen, coffee table and bedside table which had traces of cocaine. There were two dummies found on the kitchen worktop and in the living room,” added Miss McGuinness. “They were taken for analysis and contained an unquantified amount of cocaine.”
Manzur and McBride were both arrested and gave “no comment” interviews. The court heard that the baby suffered no long-term harm.
Gemma Elder, defending first-time offender Manzur, informed the court that her client lost her six-year job at a construction firm due to the “unknown outcome” of the case. Garvey McArdle, defending McBride, revealed his client is currently studying to become a drugs counsellor.
Sheriff Tony Kelly deferred sentencing until next month pending background reports and granted bail to both defendants. He warned: “The court is considering custody for both of you – I should not pre-judge the outcome before I have reports. You both put the child in grave danger.”
