Bacon will be extra crispy if you swap oil for ingredient recommended by chef

By staff5 July 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

A chef has shared his simple hack for cooking the “most amazing perfectly cooked crispy bacon”. The method is quick, easy and “foolproof”, and it doesn’t involve using oil.

Bacon is a breakfast staple for many, often accompanied by eggs and perhaps avocado. For those seeking tastier and crispier results, there’s a specific cooking method, and surprisingly, it doesn’t involve oil.

Oil should be the last thing added to the pan, as the bacon’s fat will render and help it release from the pan during cooking.

Instead, the chef behind The West Country Kitchen YouTube channel insists that you “need” to use water.

He captioned his video: “How to cook perfect Bacon using Water. Learn this amazing hack to make the best-ever bacon.

“My recipe in this video is very easy, quick and foolproof to prepare and cook [bacon].”

To cook the “most perfectly crispy bacon”, begin by placing a frying pan on the hob and setting the heat to low.

You can use any type of bacon for this method, but streaky back works better, according to the chef, reports the Express.

Place the bacon in the pan, ensuring it’s not too crowded. Then take some water and “add a little splash” to the pan and swirl it around.

Allow the bacon to cook for five minutes on a low heat before flipping it over. By this point, all the water will have mostly evaporated.

The chef explained: “This method works really well because the water helps to render out all the fat and will cook the bacon nicely, gently and evenly.”

Once the water has evaporated, you can then increase the heat to achieve a “beautiful caramelisation” on the bacon.

Keep flipping the bacon to get an even colour and when it’s nearly done, chuck in a final splash of water.

Shimmy the pan, making sure to spread the water about. This last sprinkle is “really important” for deglazing the fry-up.

Let the liquid simmer off and then sizzle up the bacon for another two or three minutes for the “most amazing perfectly cooked crispy bacon”.
