Bacon will be ‘extra crispy’ without burning it by using 1 kitchen item

By staff11 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Crispy bacon is a breakfast staple, but it can be difficult to get it just right. A culinary expert has shared a simple hack to make bacon extra crispy without burning it

There’s nothing quite like the smell of bacon sizzling away in a frying pan to kick-start your day, but it can often end up burnt or soggy if not cooked correctly. We all adore crispy bacon, yet many of us mistakenly drench it in oil or overcook it in our quest for that perfect crunch.

But now, culinary whizz Barbara Curry, the brains behind Butter & Baggage, has revealed a game-changing trick to achieve perfectly crispy bacon: dust it with a bit of flour before cooking. Barbara confessed: “I was a little sceptical about how adding flour to the bacon would make that much difference, but just wait until you taste bacon that has been floured first.

“It’s not only crispy but doesn’t have that burnt taste you get sometimes when trying to get your bacon extra crispy.”

It might sound too easy to be true, but lightly dusting your bacon with flour helps soak up excess moisture as the fat melts away, reports the Express.

This simple step aids in crisping up the bacon during cooking and also imparts a lovely golden hue that makes it look even more mouth-watering.

The flour also acts as a sponge for the oil as the bacon fries, significantly reducing the risk of hot grease splattering around your frying pan.

Your bacon will taste far superior as the flour cuts down on the greasiness, giving you a crispier texture without the need for excessive oil or prolonged cooking times.

How to cook bacon to perfection

Then simply pop it into a frying pan over medium heat. Give it four minutes and you’ll have flawless, splatter-free, non-greasy bacon.

While frying bacon in a pan is the usual method, Barbara suggests giving oven-baking a go.

Barbara shared: “I still cook bacon on the hob when I just need a few pieces, but when I’m serving breakfast for four or more, I’m making it in the oven.”

Simply preheat your oven to 200C and line a tray with tin foil for an easy clean-up.

Lay your bacon strips on the tray and bake for 12 to 15 minutes. The cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of the bacon, so keep an eye on it around the 10-minute mark.

Once your bacon is cooked to perfection, transfer it to a paper towel to soak up any excess grease. Your crispy, golden bacon is now ready to be added to a buttery roll.
