Banish ‘slippery’ moss from the driveway and lawn ‘for good’ with 1 natural ingredient

By staff9 October 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Moss is a common issue in lawns and on patios, but this household ingredient can help tackle the problem without the need for harsh chemicals, according to a gardening expert

Moss can be a real bother in your garden during the cooler months, thriving especially in damp, shaded areas. Your lawn and patio are usually the prime targets for this green invader.

Left unchecked on your grass, moss will hog all the sunlight and water, leaving your lawn looking less than lush. And let’s not forget the patio where it may not cause damage but turns your smart paving stones into a slippery mess.

Now for those wanting to avoid harsh chemicals, there’s some good news from the garden shed, reports the Express.

Chelsey from the gardening blog Good Grow has got the lowdown on a nifty natural solution using something you’ve probably got in your kitchen cupboard – baking soda.

She shared: “Baking soda, a common household item, is a versatile agent that can effectively kill moss for good on various surfaces including lawns and hard materials like paving stones.”

The secret?

Baking soda turns the tables on moss by cranking up the pH level, leaving it high and dry (quite literally).

To kick moss to the curb with baking soda, you’ve got a couple of options: spray it or go full-on with a dry assault.

The best approach depends on how much moss you’re up against and what the weather’s doing.

If you’re ready to spray away, just mix two to three tablespoons of baking soda with about 950ml of water until fully dissolved.

Fill a spray bottle with the solution and generously spray the affected area on a dry, sunny day to ensure the solution sticks to the moss and has time to work before any rainfall.

For the dry method, liberally sprinkle baking soda over the mossy areas on a dry day to prevent it from washing away.

Reapply on subsequent sunny days to reinforce the effect and ensure the moss dies and is easily removed.

By taking a targeted and careful approach to moss removal with baking soda, you can maintain and promote a healthy environment for both your lawn and the surrounding garden.
