Banish weeds from lawns by spraying one common kitchen solution

By staff2 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Weeds can be a real pain for gardeners, but there’s a simple way to get rid of them using a common kitchen staple – and it is safe for the environment too

Weeds can quickly take over your garden space and lawn if left unchecked. The unwanted plants offer limited benefits and most gardeners prefer to banish them from their plots to maintain a tidy and thriving appearance.

August holds crucial significance in gardening. It marks the final phase of summer before the chillier autumn months arrive. Therefore, it’s important to take action or face the consequences. Some weeds can prove beneficial – they may protect exposed soil, flourish in containers, or even be edible. But invasive or toxic varieties should be eliminated.

To assist green-fingered enthusiasts, specialists from Better Homes & Gardens revealed that a homemade weed killer provides an efficient method for tackling unwanted plants that have begun sprouting.

They explained: “A vinegar mixture works best on small, annual weeds. It’s less effective with older weeds, perennials, or grasses. Drenching the roots of these more stubborn weeds with your DIY solution will likely be required (fall is a good time to do this), and even then, it probably wouldn’t have much effect.”

“It’s also worth noting that this solution only kills the tops of the target weeds, leaving the roots that can regrow new shoots, so will require more than one application.”

Nevertheless, the specialists have urged gardeners to apply the mixture with caution, reports the Express. They warned: “While salt in a vinegar weed killer solution helps dry out weeds, it can build up in the soil and damage it so nothing else will grow in that area. Apply sparingly and avoid using it in areas where you’d like other plants to grow.”

How to make a vinegar weed killer

Pour one gallon of white vinegar into a large bucket, then add two tablespoons of washing-up liquid and one cup of salt, giving it a good stir. Ensure all the ingredients are well combined. Transfer the mixture to a household spray bottle or garden sprayer.

Opt for a sunny day with temperatures of at least 21C for application, as the solution is most effective when plants are actively photosynthesising. Steer clear of windy or rainy days, as wind can carry the vinegar to unwanted areas and rain can weaken its potency.

When using the vinegar weed killer, get up close to the weed and spray directly onto the leaves. Wait at least a fortnight before reapplying if needed.

By following these simple instructions, gardeners can keep their outdoor spaces tidy and provide healthy growth to their plants during the final weeks before the autumn season. The best thing about it all is that it doesn’t cost any extra money, and it’s super effective.
