Barclays clarifies who qualifies for £175 payment after confusion over two words

An existing Barclays customer wanted to know if they would qualify

Barclays has clarified the rules around how is eligible for a £175 payment going out to certain customers. The group is offering the payment when you open a Barclays Bank Account or Premier Current Account in the Barclays app.

The information about the offer on the bank’s website states that the offer is only for “new customers”. An existing customer contacted Barclays over social media to ask if they would qualify given their particular situation.

They queried: “For the £175 switch offer, do I count as an eligible new customer if I don’t have (and never have had) a Barclays current account, but do have a mortgage and credit card with you?” Barclays responded with some good news: “If you’ve never had a current account with us, you’d absolutely be classed as a new customer if you were to look into opening a current account with us for the very first time.”

The bank also invited the person to message them with their name, postcode and mobile number, so they could get more support. There are several other steps you need to complete to get the £175 bonus cash.

How do I qualify for the Barclays £175 switch bonus?

To get the cash sweetener, you will need to either open a sole Barclays Bank Account or a sole Premier Current Account. If you open the Barclays Bank Account, you will also need to join Blue Rewards to get the extra cash.

You will need to complete a full switch using the Current Account Switch Service, which will automatically move over all your direct debits and other regular payments. Your switch will need to include at least two active direct debits, and you must complete the switch within 30 days of requesting it.

Customers also have to pay in at least £1,500 into the new account, within 30 days of opening it. Your new eligible current account also has to still be open when Barclays pays you the £175.

The switch offer is running from July 15 to August 28. Barclays may withdraw, change or replace the offer at any time.

You will not qualify if you have opened a Barclays current account before July 15, 2025, or if you have had a switch offer from the group before. You also can’t get the funds when opening a joint account.
