Barclays explains exact process to claim £900 payments in the app

By staff8 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

You can get some bonus cash from Barclays with two of its accounts

Barclays has clarified the rules around how to claim some bonus payments from the bank. The bank is offering free cash when you switch to either a Barclays Bank Account or a Premier Current Account, with up to £900 on offer. You need to complete the switch in the Barclays app to qualify.

A customer asked over social media early in the morning of October 8 about how the process works as they thought they would already need to have one of the accounts open to access the app. Barclays responded to say: “I can assure you that you do not need to have an account to enable you use the app for account opening.”

The bank also referred the person to a page on the Barclays website with more information about the switch offer. But the customer tried using this page and could only find a button to ‘Register for the app’ with seemingly no ways to sign up as a new customer.

Barclays responded with some more guidance, saying: “Please scroll down and click ‘Switch in the app now’. This will show you how to download the app.

“Once you’ve downloaded the app, open the app and select ‘I’m new to Barclays’ on the welcome screen and follow the prompts to open a current account. If you have any issues, don’t hesitate to pop back in here, and I’ll do my best to support.”

But the customer was still having trouble finding their way, saying they couldn’t find the ‘I’m new to Barclays’ button. Posting early in the morning, they said: “I don’t have a UK phone number, and the page says account applications open at 6am.

“I’m guessing the button you mention will also appear at 6am, but the app fails to tell me that.” Barclays said in response: “Sorry for any confusion, you are correct.

“Some features of the app are unavailable through the night but later this morning, you can apply to hold an account as a new customer.” Barclays is offering £400 when you switch to a Premier account or £200 when you switch to a Barclays Bank Account and sign up for Blue rewards.

You need to carry out a full switch through to app, and you will need to bring over at least two active direct debits to get the cash. On top of either switch offer, you can also get up to £500 when switching your ISA savings to Barclays, meaning you could get £900 in total if switching to the Premier account.
