Sophie Ellis-Bextor has been able to bring her Kitchen Disco to the masses and everyone has been dancing in their living rooms – all thanks to a certain nude scene
Sophie Ellis-Bextor has praised Barry Keoghan’s naked dancing for giving her a new fanbase.
Staying in has become the latest trend, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor is the queen of home discos. The ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ hitmaker had millions grooving in their kitchens during lockdown, and she’s set to do it all over again tonight with her NYE Disco on BBC One and iPlayer. Party-goers can skip the crowded clubs and still get their Groovejet fix as the clock strikes twelve.
Sophie is a big advocate for home parties, sharing her most cherished disco memory: “I don’t think it’s a place, I think it’s a feeling. It’s actually more about the sense of freedom I get from music, even just listening on my headphones when I’m on the tube… and being less worried about what’s cool is incredibly liberating.”
She’s encouraging everyone to don their dancing shoes – “because I’ll be wearing mine” – and promises a lineup of sparkling guests including Jessie Ware and Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters, all united by their love for disco. When asked about her top dance track, Sophie reveals: “I like songs that seduce you. Thelma Houston’s version of Don’t Leave Me This Way is the perfect example of that.”
2024 has been an extraordinary year for Sophie, with ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ soaring in popularity after featuring in a memorable nude scene with Barry Keoghan in the film Saltburn. The song enjoyed a second wave of success, leaving Sophie ecstatic: “It’s a pretty glorious thing to happen, especially with an old friend like Murder On The dance floor.”, reports the Daily Star.
“It’s like having a second honeymoon. Like a bit of magic lightning striking. When Murder first came out, I had to wait ’til I went on tour to see people’s reactions. But now, with TikTok, you get to see an immediate insight into people having fun with your music, and that lends even more energy to what you’re doing.”
Sophie revealed her New Year resolution: “I’ve been paying for two language apps for the last three years, and I keep not doing Italian. So I should probably just commit to actually learning a bit more Italian.” The pop star recently dropped her new single Freedom Of The Night and fans can expect a full album in the spring. She shared with AnOther magazine: “I wanted something musically optimistic, upbeat, fun, with some really interesting collaborators. I’ve just had a ball, basically.”
“It’s celebratory pop and I hope it can give other people that little pep in their step.” 2025 looks set to be another massive year for the Kitchen Disco Queen, but she’s quick to credit one actor: “Barry. I mean, if it wasn’t him and his naked dancing!”
