New research from Ripe Insurance’s Motorhome and Campervan Insurance experts aimed to uncover the best hidden gem motorhome destinations across the UK, perfect for a four-wheeled getaway

The UK’s most southerly city has been named the best underrated motorhome spot in the country.

New research from Ripe Insurance’s Motorhome and Campervan Insurance experts aimed to uncover the best hidden gem motorhome destinations across the UK, where the roads aren’t so busy, the vibes are good, and the facilities are top-notch.

At the top of the list is Truro, which lies in mid-Cornwall, blossoming out from the Truro River. Some believe that the name Truro is derived from the Cornish word ‘tri-veru’, which means three rivers, referring to the Kenwyn, the Allen and the Truro River. All of them run through the city.

Thanks to its waterside location, Truro thrived as a trading port for many years. The cathedral city is within close range of other Cornish hot spots, being a 30-minute drive to Falmouth, Redruth and St Austell respectively.

One of the main tourist attractions in the city is the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was built between 1880 and 1910 to a Gothic Revival design by John Loughborough Pearson on the site of the parish church of St Mary. It is the Cathedral that gives the small settlement of 23,000 its city status and which dominates its skyline.

Truro is famous for its ancient cobbled streets and gothic architecture, it offers visitors 123 activities to choose from. If you are driving a motorhome into the city, you can expect to pay on average £19.16 per night to stay on one of the seven pitching sites in the area.

Mel Savage, head of Underwriting Operations at Ripe Insurance, has offered some tips for those planning on visiting some of the UK’s hidden motorhome hotspots.

Prioritise off-peak seasons

Many of the motorhome hotspots will remain busy throughout the year. Research lesser-known destinations and travel outside of school holidays to avoid crowds and enjoy a quieter experience.

Plan ahead

Hidden gem hotspots may be further away from amenities such as supermarkets or petrol stations. Make sure you are stocked up on your essentials and know how far away the closest amenities are from you.

Don’t just rely on social media for inspiration

Platforms like TikTok are a great way to learn about new areas; however, the most viral videos will often attract larger crowds. Check maps, online review sites, and forums to uncover quieter alternatives to the popular tourist destinations.
