This stunning village bay is tucked into a cliff-edge, but presents visitors and locals with some stunning outlooks across the North Sea
A stunning village in northern England is rated as one of the most magical – and that’s because it treats locals and visitors to some spectacular views.
Robin Hood’s Bay sits on the Heritage Coast of the North Yorkshire Moors and could not be anymore British if it tried. The old fishing village itself is built into a cliff and overlooks the bay, presenting anyone who climbs its cobbled streets with something of a panoramic outlook of the North Sea. Described as a “vibrant” village, it is now equipped with cafes, pubs, restaurants and independent shops along with country and coastal walks, cycle paths and rural bridleways to explore.
Musement, a travel blog, a self-proclaimed member of TUI Group, ranked the village as being one of 10 fairytale villages in the UK. In its description, it said: “As you climb its narrow, cobbled lanes you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the water. If the weather permits, set off on a country or coastal walk and admire the blend of natural and man-made beauty that permeates every nook and cranny.”
Conveniently positioned six miles south of famous Whitby, and 15 miles north of Scarborough, the village is a perfect springboard for any tourists who want to see more than one place. But anyone who wants to spend a few days in Robin Hood’s Bay, will likely find themselves drawn to the beach, with the rugged cliff-line being the perfect backdrop for dog walkers, photographers and day trippers.
However, people visiting the beach should be aware of the tidal times, as the beach is entirely submerged when it comes in. But, when it’s out and people can safely walk across it, the beach is perfect for families – especially those who like rock pooling and fossil finding. Despite being a fantastic place to explore, it’s not a beach recommended for downing towels and sunbathing, due to the position if the bay – making the winds increasingly sharp.
‘I highly recommend a visit here’
TripAdvisor reviewers speak about their long walks across the sands, and their adventures in the rock-pools. One of the most recent reviews, from this month, says: “Lovely beach for a stroll. Dog friendly. Ideal place to take the little ones to search for fossils. Nice cafe and clean amenities nearby.”
Another review from last summer added: “Robin Hood’s Bay Beach is tide dependent and you need to be very careful not to get cut off. The beach is clean with sand areas as well as large expenses of rock and cliff with many areas for fossil hunting and rock pooling to be had. Further south from Robin Hood‘s Bay Village you can find a waterfall directly onto the beach.
“It is an exciting adventurous walk that’s really is good for the soul. Do be careful of the tide times as we didn’t quite leave enough time to get back to Robin Hood‘s Bay without having to roll our shorts up and waded through the final bit. I highly recommend a visit here.”
