A postcard-worthy village has been named the UK’s best destination for autumn thanks to its amazing food scene, independent shops and breathtaking countryside on the doorstep

We may be in the final stretch of summer, but some Brits are no doubt already counting down the days until autumn hits with its crisp fresh air, cosy jumpers and ridiculously pretty walks. Basically, the perfect excuse to plan a staycation if you want to avoid the peak holiday crowds.

According to travel insiders, there’s one picturesque village that you’re definitely going to want on your radar from the moment leaves start to hit the ground, and not just because it’s famous for its amazing food and breathtaking surrounding scenery.

Malton, Yorkshire, has regularly been tipped as the ‘food capital of Yorkshire’ thanks to its plethora of independent restaurants, pubs and cosy cafés, with regular food markets and its cobbled streets packed with everything from vegan cafés to speciality gin shops.

Meanwhile streets including The Shambles are a hit with visitors as they’re lined with an eclectic mix of independent shops and boutiques where you can pick up everything from furniture and artwork to clothes and quirky souvenirs. History fans may also want to check out Yorkersgate, one of Malton’s oldest roads that dates back to the Roman times. Nowadays it’s home to a host of modern day shops, but it’s still steeped in history and well worth a visit.

Of course no autumn break is complete without a beautiful walking route, and Malton is a popular base for ramblers and hikers who want to make the most of the postcard-worthy Yorkshire Wolds that sit on its doorstep. There’s an impressive array of walks in the area whether you’re after a scenic stroll before heading for a classic Sunday roast, or you’re looking for a challenging hike! Meanwhile the River Derwent runs through the village, offering up some gorgeous riverside views too.

The village is also a short drive away from Castle Howard, an impressive stately home that boasts everything from a grandiose Great Hall to its recently renovated Tapestry Drawing Room. (If you’re planning a trip, it’s worth noting the attraction is open until October, and then from November to January it’s decked out in Christmas decorations).

With plenty to see and do in the village and its surroundings, it’s no surprise that the travel insiders at Victory Leisure Homes have named the gorgeous village as their top UK destination for an autumn holiday.

They explained: “Known as the food capital of Yorkshire, visit the market town of Malton to discover artisan producers and independent stores to enjoy delicious local food and drink even when the weather isn’t at its best.

“Described as ‘a town of markets and makers’, Malton hosts a monthly food market throughout the autumn months meaning there’s still plenty to do even when summer ends. Spend a morning walking the nearby rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds before enjoying good food and drink in one of the centre’s cosy pubs or cafes.

“Visitors can stay 15 minutes from the town centre at the family-friendly Flamingo Land Holiday Resort for a staycation for all ages.”
