Best mattress topper for students as parents say this £18 one is ‘perfect for university beds’

Heading off to uni, or moving into rented accommodation? A comfy mattress topper is a great buy – and doesn’t have to cost a fortune, as parents have been praising this £18 one

If a loved one – or yourself – is going off to university this autumn, you may be thinking about all the things you need to buy in preparation. While in reality they probably don’t need as much as you think (and plenty of things can be bought cheaply when there), a good value mattress topper comes highly recommended.

If they’re moving into furnished university halls or rented accommodation, various Reddit threads have suggested that bringing your own mattress topper is a great idea, both for comfort and hygiene reasons (we can’t imagine that a lot of money is spent on these mattresses, or that they’re replaced very often…). And this £18 Dunelm one is being called “good quality” and “perfect for university halls of residence beds”.

Thicker than a mattress protector yet thinner than an actual mattress, toppers are padded layers that lie on top of the mattress, securing underneath or on the corners, to provide extra padding, comfort and support while you sleep.

Dunelm – a great value go-to for stocking up on household essentials pre-university – is selling the Super Bounce Mattress Topper for £18 for a single bed, through to £24 for a king size bed. It contains a lightweight and breathable 100% polyester fibre filling that provides an extra layer of support, with a comfortable and breathable fabric surface for a restful night’s sleep.

It also rolls up fairly compactly (ideal if you’re filling up the car) and is machine washable – obviously not something you can do with a mattress.

Shoppers – and parents in particular – have praised this bargain bedroom buy, highlighting its excellent value and the comfy night’s sleep it gives.

“Good quality mattress topper. This topper is perfect for university halls of residence beds. The size is right and the price is right,” one person wrote on the website.

“Gives a basic student hall mattress that extra comfort to reassure a first time parent,” another review reads.

Aside from uni students, a third customer wrote, “Since having this mattress topper have slept so well and no more bad back. Looked at so many reviews and was a bit sceptical as the price was so reasonable but it was worth every penny and I would recommend. It doesn’t bunch up or move when you’re on it.”

One person, however, thought that it could be thicker, writing a three-star review that reads, “Would not actually say its super bounce. More like mattress protector.” If you are looking for something with more depth or support, Dusk’s Anti-Allergy Feels Like Down Mattress Topper, from £38, is much thicker, and has an extra 20% off this August Bank Holiday with the code BH20.

We’ve also given the Simba Hybrid Topper, from £299, a thorough review, and found that it saved us from buying a whole new mattress. And if you’re in the market for a whole new mattress, this weekend is the time to shop at Simba as the popular sleep specialists are holding a huge Bank Holiday sale across their mattresses.
