Many Brits enjoy watching birds visit their gardens, but getting them to come can be challenging, even though a simple method was recently shared to help people encourage specific birds to visit. However, there’s a straightforward technique you can use to attract more blackbirds and add some life to your outdoor space this winter.

Experts have revealed that supporting birds through the colder months is surprisingly simple, and cultivating one particular plant, or leaving out a specific fruit, can make all the difference. Blackbirds are particularly fond of them, and having them in your garden can encourage repeated visits throughout November and the months ahead.

The Cambridge University Botanic Garden has recently offered straightforward guidance for those wanting to help local wildlife. Specialists also recommend carrying out one easy daily action to ensure blackbirds remain properly nourished.

In an Instagram post, the experts explained: “Berry-bearing plants provide a valuable food source for wildlife – rowan, hawthorn, viburnum and cotoneaster attract waxwings, while blackbirds, bullfinches, and redwings love ivy berries and holly berries are a favourite with greenfinches.”

Whilst ivy commonly grows in British gardens, blackbirds actually enjoy berries more broadly. Therefore, if you haven’t got this particular plant growing, there’s no cause for concern, as alternative options can be left out instead.

Blackbirds have a fondness for berries and fruits, particularly throughout the autumn and winter months. During this period, these foods become a crucial component of what they eat.

Blackbirds are known to feast on a variety of berries such as hawthorn, rowan and holly. They also have a penchant for fruits like pears and apples, making these excellent choices if you’re looking to leave some treats outdoors.

Experts reveal that they also enjoy snacking on raisins, sultanas and currants, as well as soft fruits like blackberries and strawberries. This gives you plenty of options if you’re hoping to attract them.

However, when feeding blackbirds, it’s crucial to remember never to leave out salted products, milk or any uncooked hard grains. These foods can be detrimental to their health.

Additionally, avoid leaving out avocado, which is toxic to birds, or hard, stale foods that could cause choking. Never leave out spoiled food or anything mouldy either.

Why should we look after our feathered friends in November?

If you weren’t aware, November is a critical time to feed birds. This is because they require extra energy to endure the cold and shorter days.

Providing high-energy foods helps them build fat reserves for the long winter nights. It supports their health during a period when natural food sources are scarce.

During the chillier months, birds need more food sources to help them survive. This means that having certain plants in your garden, or offering specific foods, can greatly assist them.

If you own a bird feeder, it’s important to clean it regularly to prevent the spread of disease among birds. Also, steer clear of feeding them bread, as it often lacks the essential nutrients they need.

This advice should assist you in attracting birds while providing them with the boost they require. You’ll be aiding them more than you realise.
