Bodycare collapses into administration as 32 stores shut – see full list

British beauty retailer Bodycare has collapsed into administration and has announced 32 of its stores will shut permanently.

Some of the stores are said to have already closed earlier this week, according to local reports. You can find a full list of locations below. The chain said around 450 employees have been made redundant as a result of the closures.

The Bodycare website is also unavailable, with customers met with a message that reads: “Sorry the shop you are looking for is closed right now. Please try again later.”

Bodycare, which sells products from well-known beauty brands including L’Oreal, Nivea and Elizabeth Arden, confirmed today that it has appointed advisors from Interpath Advisory to oversee the administration process.

Bodycare was founded in 1970 on a Lancashire market stall by Graham and Margaret Blackledge, but has been owned by Baaj Capital since 2021.

The company has 147 UK stores. The news of Bodycare heading toward administration was first reported by Sky News last week. The report suggested Bodycare had recently secured a £7million debt facility against its retail inventory, prior to its collapse.

A debt facility is a formal agreement where a lender providers a specific amount of money to a borrower over a set period. Bodycare is the latest high street retailer to struggle in recent times.

Poundland last week avoided entering administration after a restructuring plan was approved by a judge at the High Court. The company had said it would run out of money in days if the deal had not been given the green light.

Poundland was recently sold to private equity firm Gordon Brothers for just £1 and at the time of its sale, the retailer had around 800 stores.

The company has announced plans to shut 68 stores, which would affect around 1,000 staff. Poundland will also close its frozen and digital distribution site at Darton, South Yorkshire, and another warehouse at Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands.

Meanwhile, River Island recently secured a restructuring plan aimed at preventing the fashion chain from collapsing – but it means 33 shops will close. The fashion retailer will pay reduced rents on another 71 stores.

Landlords are being asked to cut rents for three years and potentially stop payments completely on some sites in a bid to stem losses. Its rescue deal was approved by the High Court earlier this month.

Matthew Weaver KC, for River Island, told the that the company “simply has not been able to reverse” a trend of financial difficulty.
