A young boy, 10, was found dead after getting stuck inside a car boot for ‘a few hours’ – neighbours reported hearing a bloodcurdling scream when his mum found him in the vehicle
A young boy has tragically died just 10 years old after he became trapped inside the boot of a car.
The 10-year-old reportedly became stuck near Shepparton, 112 miles (181km) north of Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday afternoon while his mother was resting inside the house. He suffered a suspected heart attack after becoming trapped inside the car as temperatures soared to 35C.
The boy is believed to have had a fascination with cars, and it’s understood he took the keys before climbing into the car boot and getting trapped. The mother ran outside when she noticed the keys were missing – and made the horrific discovery of her son inside the car.
Emergency services were called to Gange Street in Mooroopna. They performed CPR but were sadly unable to save him. Temperatures reached a sweltering 35.5C in Shepparton on Sunday, and would have been up to 70% higher inside cars.
Neighbours reported hearing a bloodcurdling scream at around 3.30pm, and seeing the car doors and boot open. One resident was heard telling a concerned neighbour: “Don’t go over there.”
Another local, who returned home from a trip to find police and emergency services on their street, said they told him the boy had been stuck in the boot for “a few hours”. “Kids in cars is not a good mix,” another neighbour said, adding that the incident was “very sad”.
Daily Mail Australia reports the boy had been attending a Christmas catch-up with his family at a friend’s house. The owner of the house described what happened as a “freak accident” and said her friend, the boy’s mum, “told me to say nothing”.
“I’m trying to respect her. It was just a tragic accident. It’s just horrible,” she said. “It was a freak accident. It was the worst… the weather didn’t help.”
An investigation has been launched into the death, but it is not being treated as suspicious. Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
