Boy, 15, killed in M60 crash ahead of Oasis gig named as tributes pour in

The teenager died after emergency services were called to the motorway, near Blackley on Sunday night – with police alerted to reports of a ‘concern for welfare’

A 15-year-old boy who died in a horror M60 crash has been named as Israel Iyabor.

The teenager died after emergency services were called to junction 20 of the motorway, near Blackley, on Sunday night, with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers called to reports of a “concern for welfare.” The force issued a warning over travel disruption as Oasis fans made their way to Heaton Park for a gig and officers rushed to the scene of what transport agencies described as a “serious road traffic collision.”

“Sadly, a 15-year-old boy died at the scene” a police spokesperson said. “His next of kin have been informed” the force added. It has now been confirmed that the teenager who died in the collision was Israel. Manchester Coroner’s Court confirmed a file had been passed to them regarding his death.

Dozens of floral tributes have been placed at the scene of the tragedy while others have sent their condolences online. One card left at the scene reads: “It was only yesterday we [were] making TikToks. I’ll forever miss your smile, your jokes, and your bubbly personality. Hope you are at peace now you precious boy. I love and miss you so much.”

One person wrote online: “So sad. God bless him. Rest in peace” Another added: “Another beautiful angel gone far too soon. RIP young man”. A third said: “Can’t imagine what his family are going through.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, who also responded to the incident, said: “The thoughts of everyone at GMFRS are with the family and friends of the boy who sadly lost his life.”

Warning about travel disruption at the time, officers said: “There are severe delays on the M60 tonight after a fatal incident earlier today. Both directions are expected to remain closed between junctions 19 and 21 until midnight. We strongly advise people to avoid travelling in the area if they can. Thank you for your co-operation.”

The road was gridlocked until the motorway reopened around 4am today (Monday), with Oasis fans on their way to the final homecoming show at Heaton Park seen ditching their cars and walking along the carriageway in a bid to make the concert, Manchester Evening News reported.

In a statement on Sunday, GMP added: “This may impact the thousands of people who are at tonight’s final Oasis concert at Heaton Park. We will have a large number of police resources on the motorway and on local roads to help minimise disruption for concertgoers, the public, and partners.

“We strongly advise people to avoid travelling in the area if they can. Those planning to travel must prepare for severe delays and plan their journey ahead. We thank the public for their patience and cooperation.”
