The family were driving back from a trip to the coast in Southern Brazil when their car hit a double-trailer lorry, killing all five – including a 6-year-old boy

A 6-year-old boy, his mum, and three other relatives have died in a horror crash just 16 months after the youngster’s dad perished in a separate accident.

The group were driving back from a trip to the coast in Florianópolis, Southern Brazil, when their car hit a double-trailer lorry, killing all five relatives. They were travelling down the BR-280 motorway in Porto União, north-west of Florianópolis, on Tuesday, September 24 when the accident happened.

The victims of the crash have been named as Macir Mários da Silva, 50, Solizete Oldoni, 47, Fernanda Mários, 24, Taís Helena Cardoso Borges de Lima, 28, and six-year-old Yago Samuel. Fernanda was Macir’s daughter, Taís was Macir’s sister-in-law, and Yago was Taís’s son.

Last year, Yago’s father, Thiago da Silva, died in a work accident when he was hit by a street cleaning vehicle on 30 May 2023.

The five family members and Fernanda’s husband had originally set off on their journey back to Pato Branco in two seperate cars. But one of the cars broke down on the way, and had to be towed away. Fernanda’s husband then continued his journey back in the recovery vehicle, while the other family members travelled back together in the remaining car.

After the accident, Fernanda’s husband went into shock and had to be taken to hospital, but the 27-year-old trucker did not suffer any injuries in the crash. It comes not long after 6-year-old Yago lost his father, Thiago da Silva, who was also Taís’s partner and Macir’s brother, when he was also hit by a vehicle in a seperate tragedy at work.

Little Yago had been living with his mum Taís, and spending time with his wider family, including his aunt, uncle, and cousin – who all perished with him in the car crash on Tuesday.

Florianópolis is the capital of Brazil’s Santa Catarina – which boasts a long Atlantic coastline and several islands, known for its beaches and mountains. The family crashed on the 642.2 km long BR-280 motorway, connecting a number of cities across the state of Santa Catarina.

The crash is currently under investigation.
