Brazil legend Lucio taken to ‘intensive care’ after suffering burns in accident

By staff17 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Former Brazil and Inter Milan defender Lucio suffered burns at home and he remains in intensive care at a hospital in Brasilia following an incident on Thursday

Brazil and Inter Milan legend Lucio is in intensive care being treated for burns to various parts of his body. Lucio, 47, is being treated at a hospital in Brasilia after suffering the injuries on Thursday.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the accident took place at home. In a statement, the hospital said that the former defender was ‘stable, conscious and under constant observation.’

The extent and cause of Lucio’s injuries haven’t been disclosed. The ex-centre-back retired from football in 2019, having spent the last few years of his career in Brazil.

Lucio is most famous for marshalling Inter’s defence and winning an historic treble under Jose Mourinho in 2010. He was also a key part of the Ronaldo-inspired Brazil side that won the 2002 World Cup and captained his country, who he represented 105 times, from 2006 to 2011.

In addition, he won three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich. Lucio won a total of 18 trophies after making his name at Internacional in his homeland.

He was signed by Bayer Leverkusen in 2001 and helped them reach Champions League during his first season. Leverkusen were beaten 2-1 in the final at Hampden Park, Glasgow, with Zinedine Zidane scoring an iconic goal for opponents Real Madrid.

Lucio, whose full name is Lucimar Ferreira da Silva, retired from playing to spend more time with his family. He ended his career in the fourth-tier of Brazilian football with home city club Brasiliense.

“It’s a special day for me,” Lucio said when announce his retirement. “Today I officially retire from football. With great pride, much gratitude to God, gratitude to Brazil, to Rio Grande do Sul, to my family, to everyone who directly or indirectly supported me during those years.”

Lucio will be hoping to make a full recovery and watch Inter take on Paris Saint-Germain in this month’s Champions League final. The 47-year-old is a big fan of Inter’s current defence, saying in 2023: “I see the current defensive options as being very well balanced.

“There are players who have great experience in man-marking, like [Francesco] Acerbi and [Stefan] de Vrij. Players like that can also help their younger teammates a lot.

“And I like how versatile [Matteo] Darmian is. He can play on either flank, or in the back three. And then [Benjamin] Pavard and [Alessandro] Bastoni, even though they’re currently injured, remain two pillars for their national teams.”
