Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi raised eyebrows by writing ‘I love Jesus’ on his Rainbow captain’s armband, a decision which appeared to breach the FA’s rulebook
Marc Guehi and Crystal Palace have been issued with a formal reprimand by the FA over the defender’s decision to write ‘I love Jesus’ on his Rainbow captain’s armband, but he will not be charged, Mirror Football can reveal.
Guehi wrote over the Rainbow armband he wore for Palace’s draw against Newcastle on Saturday. As Mirror Football reported earlier on Tuesday, that opened him up to a potential FA charge.
Law 4 of the FA’s Laws of the Game allow “initiative slogans/emblems promoting the game of football, respect and integrity,” such as Rainbow Laces, but forbid “political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.”
But the FA have now told Mirror Football that they have instead decided to contact Palace and Guehi to ‘formally remind’ them the appearance on, or incorporation in, any item of clothing, football boots or other equipment of any religious message is prohibited as stated in Rule A4 of our kit and advertising regulations.
