A British holidaymaker who vanished while hiking on the Greek holiday island of Karpathos has been found dead.
The man, a 55-year-old, went missing more than a month ago after travelling alone to the island for the first time. He was found on Saturday in the remote area of Epionia in the north of the island.
The last known sighting of the man was him taking photographs on his phone in the fishing village of Diafani back in June. The local witness said the tourist had asked for directions to reach Vroukounda via the Lahamitis path.
Emergency services were called when the man failed to return to his booked accommodation. Firefighters, police, coast guard were all sent out and drones, sniffer dogs and volunteers combed the area but found no sign of him.
The man’s remains are to be flown to the nearby island of Rhodes for an post mortem to be carried out to establish his cause of death.
Earlier this month the Mirror reported on the death of another British tourist, who died at a popular Greek holiday resort where his body was pulled from the water.
The 57-year-old man died at Prasonisi, Rhodes, after he was found in the waters at around midday on Sunday, September 7. Officials said the Brit was unresponsive and did not have a pulse when he was brought to shore.
He was rushed to the Gennadi Health Centre by paramedics, but could not be saved and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities from the Lindos Port Authority have launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding death, with an autopsy ordered to establish the exact cause.
