Brit orders roast dinner in Thailand and can’t believe the price of it

By staff6 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

In a popular TikTok video, one British expat living in Thailand shares her review of the traditional Sunday roast and British fare at a local restaurant in Chiang Mai

A Brit living abroad has documented her ambitious quest to find a Sunday roast in her new home of Thailand. Apparently fish and chips, baked beans, Yorkshire pudding, bangers and mash and every other English comfort food you can think of is available in Thailand – but how does the taste and price compare?

The TikTok account awaywithjuliaa documents Julia’s life “as an English girl living far from home”. In one of her recent videos Julia takes her followers on a journey to rate the quality of British fare in Thailand.

Julia visits Annie’s Restaurant and Bar in Chiang Mai. “We ordered loads of food,” she says: “The only reason I came here is because I’m missing England so much.” It comes after a Brit abroad slams all-inclusive hotel food asking ‘what on earth is this?’

The first dish of fish and chips arrives and Julia says it looks promising – even complete with Heinz malt vinegar for drenching. “It’s [got] chunky chips as well,” praises Julia.

The second dish of sausages, peas, mashed potatoes housed in a Yorkshire pudding looks equally enticing. “Wow. That looks unreal,” she says before coating the whole dish in a “swimming pool” of gravy. “The size of that Yorkshire pudding [is] massive.”

Julia’s verdict after the first two dishes: “Thailand does it better than England. Feels like I’m at home.” She proceeds to show more dishes including servings of roast chicken, more chips, baked beans but declares she’s finished it all. Not only does the food taste better by Julia’s rating, she says it’s also “10x cheaper”.

While she does not break down the prices or show the final bill, Annie’s menu shows that their sausages and mash dish costs 199 Thai bahts (£4.60) and the roast chicken dinner costs 280 Thai bahts (£6.50).

Annie’s Restaurant and Bar offers a wide menu of both authentic Thai dishes and Western classics. Located in Chiang Mai Square, the establishment also boasts a large selection of imported and local craft beers, gins, rums and whiskeys.

Every Sunday the establishment offers its Yorkshire pudding adorned Sunday Roast and hosts a musical performance at 8:45pm local time. Other English favourites on offer include roast beef, roast pork and even a vegetarian Wellington option.

Julia is not the only person to sing Annie’s praises. The restaurant is not only a hub for expats but Thai locals keen to sample English food and drink. It has a Google rating of 4.6 based on over 700 reviews.

One recent rating also applauded the Sunday roast: “First time for Sunday lunch. [I] had the lamb, more than an ample portion.” The reviews also said the staff were “wonderful” and “attentive”. “The owner introduced himself and made a point of shaking our hands as we left. Will definitely return.”
