Brit tourist, 57, found dead floating in sea at popular Greece resort

The 57-year-old British man is the third to die at Prasonisi after he was found unresponsive and without a pulse in the waters before being brought back to shore

A British tourist has died at a popular Greek holiday resort where his body was pulled from the water.

The 57-year-old man is the third to die at Prasonisi, Rhodes, after he was found in the waters at around midday on Sunday, September 7. Officials said the Brit was unresponsive and did not have a pulse when he was brought to shore. He was rushed to the Gennadi Health Centre but could not be saved and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities from the Lindos Port Authority have launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding death, with an autopsy ordered to establish the exact cause.

Prasonisi is a windswept location at the southern tip of Rhodes. Its strong and stable Meltemi winds means it is a prime spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Prasonisi consists of a sandy beach and a small, rocky island – a sandbar often connecting the two seas – the Aegean and Mediterranean.

The man’s death comes just weeks after another 26-year-old British man died in Rhodes, with his body pulled from the sea. The man was pulled from the sea unconscious after swimming off Lindos, Rhode’s historic tourist capital, on August 16. The island’s port authority said it was aware of an incident involving a young foreigner being pulled from the sea.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene but he couldn’t be saved and was pronounced dead. His passing was later confirmed by medics at the nearby Archangelos Health Centre. Local police are investigating the circumstances around the incident, with an autopsy ordered by the Forensic Medical Service.

In a statement, the UK Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities”.

In June, a 68-year-old Brit died on a beach in Greece after going swimming and losing consciousness. Officers from the Central Port Authority rushed to Lindos beach in Rhodes and took the man to the nearby Archangelos health centre, where he was pronounced dead.
