The 36-year-old’s body was moved to the Council of Forensic Medicine (Adli Tip Kurumu), in Istanbul, for an autopsy. Turkish police have launched a probe into the shocking death, according to Turkiye Today.
A spokesperson for the FCDO spokesperson told The Mirror: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Turkey and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Rama’s remains have since been given to his family and have been repatriated to the UK, according to Turkish media. Turkey has become a major hub for Brits looking to get cosmetic procedures done but sadly some of these have ended tragically.
The Foreign Office has said at least 28 British nationals died in Turkey following elective medical procedures between 2019 and March 2024 – and more tragedies have unfolded this year.
Turkey has become a prime destination for medical tourism, especially in Antalya and Istanbul. Clinics and hotspots have become known for providing so-called “medical tourism packages”.
This includes all-in-one inclusive quotes to patients, with luxury perks like chauffeurs from the airport, hotel stays and even travel between appointments.
People also travel to Turkey for cheaper prices for example, ‘Turkey teeth’ typically cost 40% to 60% cheaper than surgery in the UK.
Many dentists in the UK have warned against Brits flying to the country to have dental work done due to the possible dangers and complications.
