A British woman has died after an SUV ploughed into a bakery at a holiday hotspot – with her husband left fighting for his life.
The driver is said to have lost control of his vehicle before crashing into the bakery, shattering the windows and dragging the couple along in Tigaki, Greece. The pair were reportedly sitting at tables outside the bakery when the large SUV came hurtling towards them. According to local news outlet Mega, the driver had just left work and was on his way to the bakery when the horror unfolded. Both the couple and the driver were left injured after he slammed into the bakery’s window. All three were taken to hospital, where the woman succumbed to her injuries and died.
The woman’s husband remains in a critical condition while the driver suffered only minor injuries. A bakery worker told local news that the driver was turning to enter the bakery and appeared to lose control of the vehicle. She said: “The driver was in a state of shock, clutching his head, shouting ‘what happened, what did I do?'” The Traffic Police in Kos have since launched an investigation into the crash.
It comes just weeks after a British tourist was killed whilst out walking with his wife in India after a driver in a rental car lost control and pinned the couple against a wall. Harish Solanki, 86, was struck while holidaying in the town of Candolim in Goa, along with his 81-year-old wife Chandrakanta. The pair were both rushed to hospital with critical injuries. Mr Solanki was later pronounced dead.
