A director of a restaurant has taken his 30 members of staff to Marrakesh in Morocco for the four-night break, leading him to being dubbed ‘Britain’s Best Boss’ — again
A boss has been dubbed ‘Britain’s best’ after he gave 30 staff members an all-expensive paid holiday to Marrakesh, Morocco.
The title of “Britain’s Best Boss” has once again been earned by Sumo Pan Asian director Gary Chin, as he whisked his staff away on a holiday retreat this month from his two thriving East Yorkshire establishments — one in Hessle and the other in Beverley — and with plans to launch a third in Northallerton, North Yorkshire.
Preserving what’s become an annual tradition, he closed his restaurants for a break and treated his team to four nights of escape to the sun-soaked climes of Marrakesh, Morocco from January 6 to January 10.
Gary recounted: “On this particular trip they enjoyed a hot air balloon and we had lunch together on the first day. We then split up into small groups because there are 30-ish people so it is difficult to go together.”
His personal highlight was the picturesque hot air balloon journey, but admitted that paragliding, quad biking, and camel riding were all equally entertaining. “Everything was quite fun,” he added.
Reflecting on the importance of this gesture despite challenging economic times, he said: “It was my pleasure. This last year for my business is OK, but it is not great because of the economy. People around me say ‘Since you are not making so much money why don’t you just stop doing it?’
“But I insist that want to do this staff trip. I have done it since I first had my takeaway in Newland Avenue, so it has been happening for 10 years and with more and more people.
“The staff do appreciate it. I need to pay for the air ticket and accommodation, it is hard work, but if you are doing something for your staff they in turn appreciate it and are happy – and everything is fine”, reports Hull Live.
Last year, the team was whisked away on a complimentary trip to Barcelona, while the previous year saw them soaking up the sun in Tenerife. Following the 2023 trip to Tenerife, Gary said: “I can’t say that other employers should do the same. I just do what I can do. At the moment the whole economy is not great, and it has been a difficult year. I am just trying my best to treat them and hope that in return they would be good to me as well.”
Despite the trip to Tenerife, Spain, costing Gary £600 per person, he hopes to continue the annual tradition for years to come.
