British family who ditched UK say Christmas is ‘much better’ for kids in Spain

By staff9 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

A British family who ditched the UK and moved to Spain said there’s one thing they love about their new home at Christmas. According to them, it’s much better for the kids

Lots of people dream of leaving the UK, and moving to a country that boasts a lot more sunshine, and one family did just that, despite there being great differences in culture. One surprising difference they have noticed is just how much better Christmas is in Spain, based on their experiences.

Previously, they shared a video explaining just why this is the case on TikTok, and people have been left stunned by their explanation. Known as the Chaplin family online, the mum detailed just how much better the festive season is for families at the popular tourist spot, and the reasons why may leave you surprised.

She’s one of many expats who document their lives abroad online, with many also sharing personal tales of life in the sun. One person previously opened up about a city they uncovered while exploring an area that turned out to be a total “hidden gem.”

In a video speaking about their experiences last year, she said: “So, one of the key differences about Christmas in Spain in comparison to the UK is that there is just tons of free stuff to do with the kids here. So, the amount of things that we have done over Christmas have just been unbelievable.

“We have paid either very little, or nothing, to do it. So, for example, we’ve had the Santa parade, we’ve met Santa, we are going to go and meet one of the three kings. There’s a three kings parade.

“We’ve also done some jumping on a snow globe, like bouncy castle trampoline. We’ve been to see the Grinch. That wasn’t free, but it cost us €24.00 (£20.86) for the four of us.

“We went to a kids’ celebration for new year’s eve, and at these things you tend to get free stuff, because it all sort of adds to the event. So, whether that is like a lightsaber that you can wave around, or some sweets or something else that just helps to complement the event.

“There’s also the enchanted wood just near where we live, which is like a lights event. If we’d have done all these events in the UK, it could have cost us hundreds of pounds. It’s just one of those things that makes Christmas so special, whilst not spending a ton of money.”

Last year, she said the family had an amazing time, and she feels that Spain works to help put families first. In her opinion, it really allows families to enjoy their time together at what is a special time of year for many.

Hundreds of people have viewed the video since it was shared, with many being quick to comment. People’s views were quite varied.

One person said: “I have a house in Costa Blanca. I love Christmas here, [and] cannot wait to move out permanently. Well done you for making a better life for your family.”

Another added: “We much prefer Christmas in Spain.” A third replied: “I’m Spanish and living in the UK. I do love Christmas here, but I miss the three kings night. Other than that, I think the UK does a really good job too.”

Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “Happy to know you like Spain. Also, I have the UK in my heart as I spent 10 years of my life there. God bless.”

According to reports, in 2024, average Christmas spending in the UK was predicted to be around £600 to £700 per person, though some housesholds were said to have spent over £1,800. However, spending can often differ every year, as it can depend on individual circumstances, with typical expenses including gifts, food and travel, and people typically spending a lot more in December in comparison to other months.

In Spain, the average family’s Christmas spending was predicted to be around €520 (£451.96) per person in 2024. Here, it’s claimed food tends to be the largest expenditure.
