Sarah Jane Thompson, 26, was found dead on Wednesday in the Torrent de Pareis region of the Tramuntana mountain range. Her 32-year-old boyfriend, identified as Alexander Johnson, is still missing.
The female British hiker who died after being swept away in a Majorcan canyon during flooding has been named as Sarah Jane Thompson.
Police and firefighters are due to resume their search tomorrow for 26-year-old Sarah’s missing boyfriend Alexander Johnson, 32.
Authorities confirmed on Wednesday that a body found after flash flooding in Majorca was that of a missing woman after a huge search and rescue operation was launched the day before when the two Brits were declared missing.
Ten people, including people from Britain, France, Germany, and Spain, had been trapped in severe flooding following heavy rain and were rescued by the country’s Civil Guard. The 32-year-old’s body was finally found in the area.
The area is known as the the Torrent de Pareis in the Tramuntana mountain range and is a riverbed that can be hiked during the dry months. However, it is known for flash floods during large amounts of rain as it collects a large amount of rainwater that falls on the mountain and funnels it down this narrow valley.
Parts of Majorca were affected by severe flooding following heavy rain earlier this week. The Tramontana mountain range has been one of the worst-affected areas.
The Civil Guard, speaking on Wedneday, said: “The Civil Guard yesterday rescued 10 people who were trapped in the Torrent de Pareis by a torrent of water. Our Greim unit established an operation throughout the day there to prevent possible accidents involving hikers who were in the area given the forecast of heavy rain.”
The missing case comes as official data from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior states that between 2020 and 2023, at least 460 adults also vanished in the Canary Islands, from a population of just 2.2million. Tenerife has the second-highest number of missing people in the whole of Spain, following Andalucia, which has a population four times larger at 8.5million.
Jay Slater, who died in Tenerife after falling from a height in the remote Rural de Teno national park, was said to be the 11th person to go missing in Tenerife in just six months. Among the recently missing is 71-year-old Marc Francis, said to be a Belgian national, who disappeared on April 24.
