British tourist says popular holiday spot feels like ‘ghost town’ with bars ‘shut down’

Huge crowds of tourists have flocked to a popular holiday destination in recent days, but some have claimed the region is now a “ghost town” and is “dead” after seeing videos online

Brits have expressed their disappointment over a beloved holiday hotspot, describing it as “on decline” after witnessing deserted bars that were once bustling with life. The shocking state of the popular resort has been highlighted on social media, where tourists have shared videos of the “empty” bars, leading many to label the destination a “ghost town.”

A woman named Cherene recently posted a video from Marmaris, Turkey, claiming that “14 bars had been shut so far”. In her eye-opening footage, she even stated that “even the beach was closed in the daytime” as she strolled through a popular area.

Cherene believes this is due to “new rules” implemented in Turkey, which now impose a curfew on venues. She said: “It’s absolutely mad – they’re just trying to get rid of the tourism. All closed, look. It’s ridiculous, isn’t it? It’s mad. All these bars are empty, crazy.”

Despite the closures, Cherene did highlight some venues that remained open during her walk, although they appeared far from busy. She is not alone in her observation that the destination has drastically changed in recent times.

This comes as Marmaris attempts to regulate its nightlife, with venues facing early closures and a ban on late-night music.

The new regulations, introduced amid concerns over unsuitable behaviour at certain hotspots, have imposed a curfew and tighter restrictions to show consideration for locals.

Despite the recent implementation of these measures, music has been banned after midnight for a while now. Reports indicate that establishments are now required to close by 1am, with patrons encouraged to depart by 12.30am.

Should any establishment flout these guidelines, authorities possess the power to shut them down. The move has sparked a flurry of opinions on the changing atmosphere in Marmaris, particularly after Cherene’s video went viral.

One person said: “Turkey is dead.” Another vowed: “I will never go to Turkey again.”

A third person said: “Give it two years, and hardly anyone will be going there.” A fourth added: “Marmaris used to be such fun, it’s sad they ruined tourism.”

However, some say they understand the need for the rules. There were suggestions that there might be valid reasons behind the closure of some venues.

One person said: “There’s a simple solution though, follow the rules. I think midnight is ample time to enjoy an evening, just an opinion though.”

Another commented: “My friend has a place above the Migros (supermarket). We stayed there last year in August. The noise from bars and restaurants was really disturbing. Marmaris is a very beautiful place. He think it’s a great move from the Government.”

Others have pointed out that venues might be required to close temporarily if they’re caught flouting the rules, which could explain why some establishments seem to be “shut up”.
