Brits missing football goals at home as they’re sat on the loo, new survey shows

Deliveroo has launched a new ‘Score Back Scheme’ for fans to claim food credit if they accidentally miss a goal – here are the top reasons why football fans are missing key moments at home

Brits are frequently missing football goals at home due to toilet breaks, a recent survey has found. Whether it’s answering the door, nipping to the loo, or making a cuppa, these interruptions are robbing fans of key moments in the game and can be incredibly frustrating. To perk things up a little bit, Deliveroo is offering some consolation with the introduction of its new ‘Score Back Scheme’.

The initiative comes in response to a nationwide survey that shed light on how often viewers miss important goals while watching at home and why – and the reasons are all too familiar.

Over half confessed they were in the loo at the time, while a third were rummaging in the fridge. Others had slipped away to make a cup of tea, turned their backs to the telly, or were texting friends about the match.

Moreover, a fifth admitted they missed a goal because they were at the door accepting a delivery.

The study also uncovered that nearly half of football fans have then had to lie to friends or family saying they’d seen a goal when they hadn’t, with over a third choosing to watch replays of the missed goal in secret to dodge any awkwardness with friends and family.

The scheme launches just in time for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025. The campaign gives unlucky fans a reason to cheer even if they’ve looked away at the wrong moment.

Kicking off from 13th to 27th July Deliveroo is offering £30ccredit to fans who miss a goal because their order arrives at the exact moment the ball hits the net (or within a minute either side of the goal)*.

Supporters who make a qualifying purchase of £30 or more during a live women’s football match this summer, and have their food delivered one minute before or after a goal is scored, can message Deliveroo’s UK Instagram account within 48 hours to lodge a claim.

Once confirmed, they’ll bag themselves £30 Deliveroo credit by 11 August 2025, which will be good for three months.

Arabella Jenkins, a spokesperson from Deliveroo, said: “We know the beautiful game can throw up some truly unpredictable moments, and sometimes those moments could coincide with the arrival of your Deliveroo.

“So if you’re caught off-guard by a goal while accepting your delivery of match day essentials, we’re changing the rules of the game to turn unlucky moments into a tasty win with our all-new ‘Score Back Scheme’.”

*The Deliveroo order must arrive either 1 minute before or after a goal is netted by a professional women’s football team shown on national UK telly for the claim to be valid. Orders containing items restricted to those aged 18 and over are not eligible.

Availability and geographical location apply. This offer is exclusive to UK customers only.
