Research has revealed that sheds provide the perfect environment for a number of pests and that Britons should check their garden sheds to avoid a certain infestation

Experts have issued a warning that garden sheds could be harbouring unwanted guests and have urged Brits to check them before it’s too late.

Research by Crown Pavilions, a top supplier of luxury garden rooms, reveals that sheds provide the ideal environment for pests seeking refuge from the cold. These pests can include rats, mice, woodlice, spiders, slugs, snails, termites and ants.

Daniel Steward, managing director at Shield Pest Control, told experts at Crown Pavilions that it’s crucial to pest-proof the garden shed and remove any potential attractants by eliminating food sources, securing outdoor bins, and keeping bird feeders at a distance to deter rodents and other pests.

Signs of pests in a shed can include droppings, gnaw marks, cobwebs, and damaged wood. Crown Pavilions has offered four tips for homeowners: regularly inspect your shed for potential entry points and any visible signs of pests and rodents; seal gaps and holes with caulking or expanding foam; add metal mesh screens or rodent-proof barriers over vents or along the roofline to prevent pests from squeezing in; and declutter and ensure proper storage.

Clutter can be a magnet for unwanted visitors, so it’s important to keep your shed neat and tidy. By regularly clearing away debris such as fallen leaves, and avoiding the temptation to overfill your shed, you’ll help cut down on condensation, prevent mould build-up and stave off water damage.

If pests do find their way in, natural repellents like peppermint oil and vinegar can work wonders, alongside more traditional chemical pesticides. For the best results, use soaked cotton balls with peppermint oil placed strategically around the shed, and splashes of vinegar at potential entry points, reports the Express.

Luke Dejahang, gardening expert and CEO at Crown Pavilions, added: “Keeping your shed free from pests during winter not only protects your belongings but also ensures the integrity of the wooden structure. By following these tips, homeowners can enjoy a pest-free and well-maintained shed throughout the winter season.”
