Brits urged to cut branches this weekend or face £2,000 roof repairs

By staff14 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

With storm season approaching, experts are warning that one branch could cause thousands in damage – but one pre-autumn check could save you the stress and the bills

Autumn is here and with storm season officially underway, your roof could be at serious risk.

A single overhanging branch might not look like much now, but once strong winds hit, it could cause hundreds – or even thousands – in roof repairs.

Experts warn that storm damage can cost homeowners anywhere from £250 to £2,000, and that’s just for surface-level fixes. One cracked tile or loose shingle could lead to leaks, rotting timber, and a much bigger bill down the line.

“Homeowners often wait until it’s too late. They see a small branch hitting their roof and think nothing of it, but the debris is slowly chipping away at the tiles,” says Glen Peskett, a circular saw blade specialist at Saxton Blades.

“The next big storm could be the one that causes a major leak. A quick cut with the right tool now is all it takes to prevent that from happening.”

Storm-proof your home before it’s too late

Trim back risky branches

Check for any limbs hanging over your roof or gutters – these need cutting back before wind or rain turns them into weapons. Use a sturdy ladder and sharp saw, and avoid leaving a stub that can splinter or rot.

Use the right blade

Avoid blunt tools. Glen says using the correct blade makes a clean, smooth cut that heals faster and avoids damage to the tree. A jagged wound left by a dull blade can lead to disease or regrowth problems.

Clear your gutters

Remove any stubborn, compacted muck using a multi-tool with a scraper blade. Blocked gutters can cause overflow, leaks and water damage fast once the rain hits.

Secure fences and sheds

Check for loose panels or weak spots. Cut new timber as needed to reinforce anything that could get blown loose. Sheds and fencing are common casualties in the first major storm of the season.

Inspect decking and boards

Loose decking? Warped planks? – Trim and re-secure them now. One strong gust can lift them clean off, leaving your garden in chaos.

Taking an hour now could save you thousands later. Storms don’t just hit – they expose the little problems you forgot about all summer. Stay ahead, stay safe, and make sure your home is ready.
