Brits warned to avoid popular holiday destination ‘like the plague’ due to scam

By staff3 April 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Tourists are often targeted by scammers and pickpockets as they are typically less aware of their surroundings. Certain travel hotspots are notorious for it

Spain shines as a top holiday pick for UK travellers, with most Brits enjoying hassle-free trips. Yet, tourists do find themselves in the crosshairs of scam artists since they’re often less vigilant while soaking up new experiences.

A Reddit user by the handle ‘Olyve_Oil’ warned: “Avoid like the plague anyone trying to hand you flowers, bunches of rosemary or hell-bent on reading your palm. Don’t even acknowledge their presence.” Tourists might think they’re snagging free flora but are typically hit with a bill after accepting them.

Prices can be a mixed bag and while there’s no obligation to pay up, the pressure can be real, reports the Express. This ruse is a go-to in busy cities, especially at buzzing tourist hotspots or near transit hubs.

Chiming in, another user instructed: “Do not accept roses or bouquets from people. They will force you to pay.” Despite these dodgy dealings, the original poster praised Spain as one of the “safest places” they’ve visited.

They shared: “It’s normal seeing dad, mum, two kids and all their grandparents out at 11pm sitting at some bar’s outdoor tables eating, drinking and having a conversation. Children are welcome everywhere.”

In Spain, eateries often keep their kitchens firing until late, and it’s no surprise to see youngsters up past bedtime.

Echoing the vibrant nightlife, another added: “I would go jogging at 6am and people were walking back from the club.‌

“Nightlife doesn’t get started until 1am sometimes. Resting in the afternoon is a real thing because of the temperature.”

Plenty of people also cautioned travellers to keep a close watch on their valuables, as pickpockets are notorious in bustling metropolises.

Barcelona’s famous Las Ramblas has been singled out as one of Europe’s top locations for pickpocketing shenanigans.
