A survey revealed how some Brits have some very odd tastes when it comes to the most important meal of the day. Ever fancied combining scrambled eggs and fruit salad?
The breakfast game has taken some truly bizarre turns among Brits – who are defying traditional morning grub with some outlandish flavour mash-ups.
A survey by Hilton showed that there’s a quiet revolution happening at the breakfast table with folks adding everything from curry sauce to porridge to slathering chocolate spread and brie on toast. Tapping into the tastes of 2,000 individuals, the study highlights that a staggering 51 per cent enjoy pushing the culinary envelope with “new and adventurous” combinations, especially when staying in hotels.
Among the eyebrow-raising choices making the rounds include a bacon sarnie jazzed up with peanut butter, scrumptious scrambled eggs paired with fruit, and for some daring diners, baked beans atop a flaky croissant fits the bill. Not shy of going even further off-piste, bacon-wrapped bananas, sausage skewered with orange, and honey mingling with cheese on toast also made the list of quirky favourites.
Joanne Hanson, 44, from Pinner, north-west London, has expressed her disbelief at some people’s unconventional breakfast choices. She said: “I know people have weird tastes, but what is wrong with a bowl of corn flakes or a bit of toast? Who are these people who wake up in the morning and decide to pour curry sauce on their porridge or wrap a banana in bacon? These people need heads examined… it must be a cry for help.”
Meanwhile, a Hilton spokesperson commented on the British love for adventurous breakfasts, saying: “Our study found that 51 percent of Brits are more experimental with their morning meals when staying at a hotel. This hunger for sweet and savoury has led some Brits to bring unorthodox creations to the breakfast table.
“Among them include curry porridge, chocolate spread with brie on toast and bacon-wrapped bananas. These are just some of the more unusual breakfast food combos we discovered.” In light of this trend, Hilton is introducing a new waffle range allowing Brits to experiment with flavours like black pudding and bacon, tomato and mushroom, and sausage and orange.
Additionally, a survey by Rainbow Riches Casino highlighted that some individuals in the UK enjoy a full roast with gravy for breakfast. The poll revealed that a breakfast pizza, topped with full English ingredients, was the favourite choice for 38 percent of those surveyed. The study also found that around one in 20 fancied Yorkshire puddings with their morning meal and three per cent would even douse their breakfast in gravy if given the option.
Additionally, another three percent would add unconventional items to their fry-up such as tomato soup, spam, tofu, carrots and hummus. Other peculiar preferences included fried pork belly and sweet potato sandwiches with a spicy onion relish (16 per cent), or spicy fish and pork with rice (15 per cent), also known as Kedgeree, an English breakfast dish inspired by the Indian meal Khichri.
