Bruno Fernandes’ telling response to critics as Man Utd captain eyes third trophy as skipper

By staff18 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Pundits like Roy Keane and Paul Scholes are often scathing in their criticism of the Manchester United captain, but one of his team-mates says that doesn’t bother him

Bruno Fernandes will not allow his critics to tell him how to captain of Manchester United.

The Portuguese midfielder splits opinion on how he goes about his business at Old Trafford – and former players like Roy Keane and Paul Scholes have been scathing in their assessment of the 30-year-old. But Fernandes will lift his third trophy as United skipper if Ruben Amorim’s team beat Tottenham in the Europa League final – and team-mate Diogo Dalot insists his countryman will always do it his way.

Dalot said: “Bruno has been showing all his career the leader that he is, especially on the pitch. Even outside the pitch, he always tries to lead by example. I think this is the type of example we should always follow because the club needs more players like him.

“I think Bruno always tries to be the best version of himself. I don’t think it is necessarily because of what people said about him.

“I just know that he is a big personality, so he knows what advice to take and what advice not to take. He is an experienced player, so I think he is big enough to understand what is best for him or not.

“Everybody at United is pleased to have him. He tries to make everyone feel comfortable around the club, especially the new signings and I think everyone likes to be around him because he is so special.

“You can spend time with him, you can ask for help, he can help you in every aspect that you need – and that is what a great leader does.”

Dalot also back manager Amorim despite his frequent criticism of his players. He said: “Don’t get me wrong, the manager is a nice guy – but when he has to give a stick to everybody, he gives a stick.

“He isn’t afraid to say what he thinks. I think you saw that since he came that he has his own ideas, he will not change for anybody because he thinks he is best for the club – and I can guarantee you it is the best for the club.
