Virgin Media has released a new Gig2 service which is offering speeds 28 times faster than the UK average.
Virgin Media has just announced the launch of a shiny new service that’s offering homes ludicrously fast downloads. The upgrade, called Gig2, will allow Virgin customers to download files and films at speeds of 2Gbps – that’s over 20 times faster than the UK average and much quicker than Sky and BT can currently offer. It’s also double the best Gig1 speed previously offered by Virgin.
With 2Gbps technology in your home, you could download a 4K movie to your TV in under 20 seconds – the same film takes around 10 minutes using a basic connection. Gamers will also find downloading top titles such as Call of Duty a breeze with these massive 240GB files taking just 16 minutes to install rather than a finger tapping 7 hours via slower 70Mbps speeds.
As well as getting quicker internet access, the Gig2 plan also includes a new router called the Hub 5x. This broadband booster includes the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology for better coverage around the home and a blisteringly quick 10Gbps Ethernet port on the back.
It certainly looks impressive but this new technology is going to cost you. Virgin says customers will be able to join today but will have to fork out £84 per month for the privilege – ouch!
Of course, 2Gbps speeds will mean the whole home and everyone in it gets impressive downloads. Broadband is a bit like a motorway – the more traffic running along it the slower it gets. Gig2 makes sure that digital road is much bigger to start with meaning your kids could be downloading that Call of Duty games and it won’t affect your morning Zoom call or nightly streaming binge.
At launch, Gig2 will be available in around one million homes with Virgin promising more properties will get access in the coming months and years.
Speaking about the update, Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “Virgin Media O2 has always been at the forefront of innovation to provide hyperfast and next-generation connectivity to homes in the UK, and Gig2 is our latest speed venture which will unlock endless opportunities for future technologies and the ever-changing digital needs of our customers.
“Gig2 will operate across nexfibre’s XGS-PON, full fibre network which will support symmetrical download and upload speeds – a first for a major UK broadband provider as an optional add-on – and will enable users to send and receive data, files and much more at the blink of an eye. With our heritage in providing cutting-edge technology and hyperfast broadband speeds, which saw us complete the UK’s first national gigabit rollout programme, we are looking forward to taking Gig2 to more areas in the near future.”
