Cadbury estimates it sells around 300 million Creme Eggs between January 1 and Easter Sunday, when the product is withdrawn from the supermarket shelves
The Creme Egg is one of the best selling chocolates around with millions produced in a single day. The chocolatey snack hits the supermarket shelves at the start of the year.
It is then taken off sale on Easter Sunday. And while it remains one of Cadbury’s most popular confectionary items, its manufacturing process has been “shrouded in secrecy”.
In particular, fans often find themselves wondering what makes up its signature egg white as well as the yolk. Now Netflix’s Inside Cadbury: Chocolate Secrets Unwrapped, has shared a glimpse into the manufacturing process.
Chocolatier Mike explained: “The yolk is actually part of the creme. So it’s exactly the same creme but with a bit of food colouring.”
According to the Cadbury website, the inside of a Creme Egg contains a “gooey, indulgent fondant”. It says the eggs contain sugar, milk, glucose syrup, cocoa butter, inverted sugar syrup, dried whey, vegetable fats and dried egg white.
Experts from the chocolatier also revealed how the eggs are made. The chocolate shells are placed into moulds and then filled with fondant.
However only one side of the shell is filled with the yellow creme. Once they are merged during the manufacturing process, it results in the Creme Egg we all know today.
One Cadbury worker explained: “We only put the yolk on one half so when the moulds close together we get a continuous yolk centre.”
Cadbury says it makes around 300 million Creme Eggs a year. The product usually returns to shelves along with a massive fanfare from the company.
Brand manager Aislinn, said: “We advertise Creme Egg every year because you have to remind people that it’s back. It’s a product that is only on the market from January to Easter every year so it’s important that when people are going into the shops they’re like, ‘Oh, I remember that. Going to pick one up again and try it. Haven’t had one in a while.”
Previous campaigns have seen cash prizes up to £10,000 offered for people finding a white Creme Egg or a prize ticket. The hunt for a white egg was phased out last year however, with the firm now offering a white chocolate edition of the egg.
Cadbury is considered one of the world’s largest confectionery companies, alongside Mars, producing classics such as Dairy Milk and Roses. It was founded over 200 years ago in Birmingham by John Cadbury.
The company held a Royal Warrant under Queen Elizabeth II until 2022. A large portion of Cadbury products continue to be produced in Bournville, a village made by the Cadbury brothers in the 1870s.
