Cadbury’s quietly launches UK chocolate in country 9.5k miles away and expats are buzzing

An Irish Expat found a stash of ‘creamier’ Cadbury chocolate from the UK while shopping on the other side of the world, but wishes she’d stocked up before letting the cat out of the bag

Maria Mulchrone was shopping at a Kmart in Australia when she came across an unexpected haul of Cadbury confectionary from the UK, which she says tastes different to what’s generally available Down Under.

The Irish expat was at the Eastgradens store in the suburbs of Sydney when she surprisingly stumbled upon a range of the cherished chocolates from these shores. Her subsequent social media posts sent more expats scrambling to stock up on the sweet treats.

In her TikTok video, Maria said: “PSA [public service announcement]: Irish and English expats in Australia… Kmart has Easter eggs from home. You’re welcome. An Easter miracle.”

The discovery left her stunned, especially when checked the label to see that they were in fact “Made in the United Kingdom”. She said finding UK Cadbury chocolate in such a large Australian retailer was a point of pride.

Maria told FEMAIL: “I actually felt so proud to see Irish/UK produce on this side of the world in a chain as big as Kmart.” She immediately recognised them as British imports because the products’ names differed from their Australian counterparts.

“The Caramel Nibbles egg caught my eye because in Australia, they’re known as Caramello,” she explained. She also noted that what is called “Dream” in Australia is simply “white” chocolate back home.

Maria confirmed the authenticity of the taste, saying the chocolate she bought from Kmart was made from “proper UK dairy milk”.

She added: “Cadbury Ireland/UK uses a lot of Irish milk which is renowned for its quality as it comes from grass-fed cattle. I believe our chocolate has a higher milk content hence its rich creaminess. Australian Cadbury has a higher sugar content making it sweeter.”

Australian Cadbury is formulated for a higher melting point, giving it a “waxier” texture due to additives that help it withstand warmer climates.

After sharing her find online, shoppers rushed to Kmart to buy up the rare chocolates. “Now I wish I had stocked up before my video blew up, loads of the shelves have been empty since,” Maria said.

The imported British Cadbury products, starting from $5, included classic hollow Easter eggs, Caramel Nibbles, Smarties and more. Maria’s video has garnered over 100,000 views, with person commenting: “Omfg. This has made my year. Running.”

Another posted: “Doing the Lord’s work! Bought $60 worth today — thank you.” A third wrote: “Oh gosh. I love English Smarties eggs! So nostalgic.”

While a fourth added: “UK Cadbury is so much better. You can’t convince me otherwise.”
