Canary Islands airport horror as Brit man, 53, plunges 30ft to death

A British man has tragically died in a fall from a car park at Gran Canaria’s airport.

The 53-year-old plunged around more than 30 feet from the multi-storey car park and he was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders called to deal with the situation. The tragedy happened around 7.30am this morning.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the circumstances. They are saying the man was not a tourist but have not released any more information about him apart from his age and nationality.

Warning for anyone who still has UK landline in their home

Drivers warned over ‘avoiding’ road instead of having to follow new rule

A spokesman for National Police on the island said: “This morning, at 7:30am, a 53-year-old British man fell from a height at Gran Canaria Airport, specifically in the car park located near the domestic departures area.

“The incident occurred from a height of approximately three storeys, about 10 metres. It has been confirmed that the person was not a tourist. No further information is available at this time.”

Local reports said the Brit fell through a gap inside the car park. Police are understood to be probing whether he died as a result of an accident or some structural fault or was deliberately attempting to end his own life.

Investigators are looking at CCTV in the area as part of their probe.

Meanwhile, in July a 25-year-old British tourist died from injuries he sustained in a fall from a supermarket car park in San Antonio.

The airport where this morning’s tragedy occurred is where a Gambian teenager was shot dead in May by armed police after reportedly going beserk and threatening holidaymakers with a knife.

Foreigners were seen running for cover as shots ran out during the May 17 incident. Footage of the drama showed the young knifeman, named as migrant Abdoulie Bah, running at one of the five National Police officers trying to intercept him who fell to the ground in the ensuing chaos as bystanders ran for safety.

He was shot as he tried to attack the officer’s colleagues who appeared to be warning him to desist before they opened fire. Court officials subsequently confirmed one of the five bullets the teenager received hit him in the neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
