Cancer Research UK to close nearly 200 shops in major blow to high street

By staff3 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The charity has announced it will close 90 stores by May 2026 and up to 100 more by April 2027

Cancer Research UK has announced plans to shut nearly 200 of its shops over the next year and a half, dealing a significant blow to high streets across the UK. The charity intends to close 90 stores by May 2026 and up to an additional 100 by April 2027.

The well-known high street chain, which currently operates 519 branches nationwide, will decide which stores to shutter based on their financial contribution, lease terms, and geographical spread. These closures could put 600 staff jobs in jeopardy, along with roles for up to 3,000 volunteers, according to the Express.

Some staff and volunteers may be offered internal redeployment roles, and assistance will be provided to help them find positions elsewhere.

Adding to the bad news, the charity also plans to shut down its online marketplace in early 2026, meaning it will no longer sell donated items on reselling platforms.

Without taking action, many of the charity’s shops are predicted to become unprofitable. Over recent years, the organisation has seen its revenue steadily decline.

In its accounts for the year ending March 2025, Cancer Research UK reported overall retail income of £120.8 million, but associated costs of £120 million. The previous year, its retail operations generated £120 million, with costs amounting to £116 million.

Cancer Research UK said its decision comes amid rising costs, inflationary pressures and shifting consumer habits, including the recent rise in employer national insurance contributions (NICs), a reduced footfall on the high street and increasing competition from online resale platforms.

The charity’s chief executive Michelle Mitchell said: “Without action, we predict many of our shops will become unprofitable. A smaller, high-performing retail operation will mean we’ll fund more life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff and volunteers.

“This news will be difficult. Our decisions have been taken after serious consideration. We’re committed to supporting everyone affected by these changes, and will provide clear information and support throughout the process.”

Nevertheless, it’s not entirely grim news as the organisation intends to launch 12 superstores by 2028, expanding its existing 46 larger out-of-town outlets. Cancer Research UK anticipates a £12.4 million boost over the coming five years as a consequence of the alterations being implemented.
