Caravan owners could get free service and dodge £2,500 fine

By staff29 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

There is no specific fine for having an unmaintained caravan but it is illegal in the UK to use a vehicle that is considered to be in a ‘dangerous condition’

Caravan enthusiasts planning a summer getaway should be aware of the risk of a hefty £2,500 fine. For those who regularly traverse the country with their caravan in tow, it’s easy to overlook some crucial checks that need to be done each time you hit the road.

As a result, official advice emphasises that caravans must adhere to stringent safety standards.

While caravan owners can perform simple checks like ensuring the wheels and tyres are free from cuts or bulges, some other safety inspections may require a professional’s touch.

Luckily, some caravan owners might be eligible for complimentary maintenance on their caravan to alleviate the stress of potential issues while on holiday.

Fine for not carrying out maintenance checks on caravan

There isn’t a specific penalty for having an unmaintained caravan. However, it is against the law in the UK to operate a vehicle deemed to be in a ‘dangerous condition’.

People found violating this law could face a fine up to £2,500 and three points on their licence. In certain cases, culprits could also face a driving ban.

A range of basic safety checks can be performed before you tow a caravan.

Guidance from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) suggests motorists should check the following:

Full details on the standards required for each of these categories can be found online.

Free safety check for caravan owners

Some caravan owners could be eligible for a free safety check on their trailer. The National Trailer and Towing Association (NTTA) provides its own scheme to provide free safety checks for trailers weighing up to 3,500kg – the max amount you can weigh with a standard full driving licence if you got it from January 1, 1997 and onwards.

The NTTA’s directory provides a list of registered workshop companies that can provide the free safety check.

In order to find your nearest registered workshop, all you need to do is enter your own postcode in the directory and you will be provided a full list.

Many of the workshops can also provide additional services to help you start your caravan holiday, including fitting a tow bar if you don’t have one already.
