Carlos Alcaraz to immediately defy parents with first purchase after £3.7m US Open win

Carlos Alcaraz has won the US Open for a second time, and the Spanish superstar is planning to get two tattoos to mark the occasion; however, he will have to break the news to his parents first

US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz could be in for an awkward chat with his parents after revealing his plans to get not one, but two tattoos to celebrate his sixth Grand Slam title. The 22-year-old Spanish star has developed a tradition of getting inked each time he clinches a major – an occurrence that’s becoming increasingly frequent as his career soars.

Alcaraz beat his rival Jannik Sinner, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, to secure his second title at Flushing Meadows, his first being in 2022. In addition to reclaiming his world No. 1 spot from the Italian, he pocketed a whopping £3.7million in prize money, and with it, he plans to defy his parents and spend a small sum of it on tattoos.

Alcaraz revealed plans to commemorate his second Big Apple victory with tattoos of iconic New York landmarks, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. After marking his Wimbledon win in 2023 with a small strawberry, he upped his ink game by getting another following his French Open victory in 2024 with an Eiffel Tower tattoo.

However, he admitted that he had initially told his parents he would only get a tattoo upon winning a major for the first time, and with this being his second US Open triumph, he’ll need to fill them in on his new plans, reports the Express.

Having previously stated that he’d need to seek his dad’s approval before getting a tattoo, he was asked about his penchant for going under the needle by the Tennis Channel after his win at Roland Garros in 2024.

He confessed to having slightly misled his parents about his tattoo aspirations. “I told my parents just to calm them that it was just the first one in every major. But this is a really big moment,” he admitted.

“Probably I’m going to put the date of this one next to last year’s. I have to discuss with them. The Eiffel Tower one, I didn’t do it yet but I will for sure. This one, I have to talk with them. A little one I can hide.”

In a post-match interview after clinching this year’s US Open, Alcaraz gave a glimpse into his future plans. “I’m gonna do two things,” he said.

“I had a bet at the beginning of the tournament: the Brooklyn Bridge, and obviously the Statue of Liberty. I’m gonna do both. And the date. Because this one is special. I have to get a tattoo twice.”

Following his triumph in New York two years ago, Alcaraz inked the date of his final victory just above his left elbow. His expanding tattoo collection also features the letters CCC on his forearm, which represent ‘cabeza, corazon y cojones’, Spanish for ‘head, heart and balls’ – a tribute to his grandfather.

He then added the strawberry to his right ankle, a symbol synonymous with the All England Club, and has the Eiffel Tower also on his ankle. Last year, he hinted that if he were to win the Olympics in Paris, he already had a design in mind for more.

“Without a doubt, the rings with the date Paris 24, one hundred per cent,” he revealed to Marca. However, Novak Djokovic’s gold medal win in Paris meant Alcaraz had to postpone his plans.

However, considering the Spaniard’s impressive haul of three Grand Slams this year alone, it’s not far-fetched to imagine Alcaraz potentially bagging gold at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 and adding another tattoo to his collection.
