Carrie Underwood has been slammed after she expressed her excitement to be performing at the upcoming inauguration of scandal-hit President Elect Donald Trump
Carrie Underwood fans have slammed her decision to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration.
The country music legend will take to the stage to perform America the Beautiful at President-elect Trump’s inauguration next week, alongside Village People at two events. Carrie, who found fame on American Idol will perform moments before the scandal-hit President takes the oath at the Capitol on January 20.
However, the 41-year-old singer-songwriter has previously poked fun at Trump, most notably at the 2017 Country Music Awards. During the show, she and Brad Paisley made light of the former Apprentice star. They sang an updated version of her song Before He Cheats but altered the lyrics to mock Trump’s bizarre Twitter outbursts.
“It’s fun to watch, yeah, that’s for sure, ’til little Rocket Man starts a nuclear war,” one lyric said. But it appears that she has now backtracked on her previous comments. Speaking about performing before Trump takes to the Oval Office again, she told Associated Press: “I love our country and am honoured to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
Despite Carrie’s excitement, it appears that this is not echoed by social media users who have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter to discuss the move, with some claiming that Carrie’s career is “over.” One user said: “Carrie Underwood’s career dropping to the lowest it’s ever been and she hasn’t had a hit song in over 10 years.”
“Say bye-bye to your career!!!” said a second. Meanwhile a third responded: “Carrie Underwood will perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration: ‘We must all come together in the spirit of unity’ Her career is over.” Another typed: “Carrie Underwood is preforming at Trump’s inauguration so I’m blocking her on all apps and boycotting all her music.”
Meanwhile, her UK fanpage tweeted: “While I will always love and support @carrieunderwood, this account will not be covering her upcoming appearance at Donald Trump’s inauguration nor any other comments/appearances she makes in support of this convicted felon.”
Other inauguration performers will include two of Trump’s musical favourites, country singer Lee Greenwood and opera singer Christopher Macchio. Meanwhile, speaking about their upcoming performance, Village People said on Facebook: “We know this won’t make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics.
“Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost. Therefore, we believe it’s now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump.”
The pomp and spectacle that comes with the inauguration of a new president kicks off this weekend in Washington with a fireworks show at Trump’s golf club in Sterling, Virginia, a campaign-style rally in D.C., a visit to Arlington National Cemetery and glitzy dinners before the former president takes the oath to become the next president.
Trump’s second inauguration is expected to be a much different affair than the last time America got a new president. Trump, who refused to accept his 2020 loss, did not attend Democratic President Joe Biden’s swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol, where there were still visible reminders of the violent Jan. 6, 2021 siege on the building by Trump’s supporters. The committee planning Trump’s inaugural ceremonies released a schedule Monday of four days of events centered around the Jan. 20th swearing-in ceremony, which Biden is planning to attend.
